What Will You Learn?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an interactive psychotherapy treatment designed to alleviate psychological stress. However, unlike many forms of talk therapy, EMDR focuses less on the source of stress or the traumatic event that precipitated it and more on the distressing emotions and symptoms associated with it.

Split into two parts, the Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy Diploma Course first explores the theory of the practice – explaining how it is applied and to whom. The second part guides you step-by-step through understanding the application of the therapy.

The course begins with an explanation of what EMDR therapy is, how it was discovered and by whom. We look at the theory that underpins EMDR, highlight its connection with memory, and even share some of the criticisms of EMDR within the science and mental health communities.

From this introduction, we move on to discuss two of the theories that explain how EMDR works – the Working Memory Theory and the theory of REM sleep. We also explore the theoretical framework that guides the practice of EMDR – the adaptive information processing (AIP) model – and how AIP supports human health and human pathology to give us greater clarity around the overall goals of EMDR.

The Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy Diploma Course looks at the disorders where it is effective, and in doing so explores the efficacy of EMDR therapy in dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias and minor complaints and conditions. We also consider both its pros and cons – to give a balanced view of this treatment.

With a good understanding of what EMDR therapy can do, we look at some EMDR training and how it is used. We start with the three-pronged protocol, which works to guide a general treatment plan, and discuss the standard eight phases of EMDR.

From there the Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy Diploma Course guides you, step-by-step and in comprehensive detail, through each of the phases necessary in EMDR therapy. These are History-Taking, Preparation, Assessment, Reprocessing, Reprogramming, Body Scan, Closure, and Re-Evaluation.

This course is a comprehensive guide in EMDR, helping you to understand what it is and how a session works. The course can help you to learn how to cope with the anxiety and distress that comes up from experiencing a traumatic memory. However, for obtaining the full benefits of EMDR we always recommend being able to talk with a trained therapist to process the memories and resolve them.

The course concludes with an exploration of how EMDR therapy might be administered to babies, children and teenagers by a trained therapist. You’ll look at infant mental health and its relationship to early memories and how an infant caregiver can help to improve their child’s mental health.

Upon completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

Define what the therapy does and understand the popular theories underpinning it
Explain how EMDR was discovered and developed by Francine Shapiro
Know what is meant by the AIP model
Be aware of the different disorders and complaints that EMDR therapy can help with
Understand that EMDR can have side-effects and know what these are
Be confident in using self-soothing tools and grounding techniques
Understand vocabulary related to EMDR therapy
Be able to implement a basic ‘tapping in’ in your own EMDR therapy if needed
Know the basics of how EMDR therapy is applied to a child or teen
