Putting the Blues into Bluegrass

A Dozen Classic Flatpicking Solos

Taught by Steve Kaufman

Includes music and TAB

Level 3

Since its earliest days, bluegrass songs have incorporated elements of the blues in their licks, melodies, chord progressions and especially their titles. Steve Kaufman, Homespun’s most prolific and popular flatpick guitar instructor, brings his masterful skills to an engaging and user-friendly compendium of twelve “bluesy” bluegrass standards that will serve any intermediate-level picker well in a jam, practice session or performance.

Each of the tunes that Steve explores brings hot new flatpicking techniques to the learning player, carefully taught in an ascending degree of difficulty. You’ll start out learning the well-known Little Maggie, developing a simple chord-based minor melody into a little flatpicking gem. Steve quickly ratchets up the level of melodic and pick-hand complexity with a number of Doc Watson-influenced tunes learned from his days of playing with his mentor: Brown’s Ferry Blues, Shady Grove, Deep River Blues, Milk Cow Blues, East Tennessee Blues and Shady Grove.

You’ll also learn great licks and solos for Florida Blues, Wayfaring Stranger, Lonesome Road Blues, Blue Ridge Mountain Blues, Salty Dog Blues and a powerful jazz-inflected version of St. Louis Blues.

This lesson will be essential for every aspiring bluegrass-style flatpicker who wants to build a solid repertoire of great tunes.
