Rolly Brown is a lifelong student of the guitar. Beginning in 1964, at age 15, he spent the next 16 years as a self-taught fingerstyle folk, blues, and ragtime guitarist. After winning the National Fingerpicking Championship in Winfield KS in 1980, Rolly got serious, and studied with several east coast jazz masters, including Joseph Federico and John Carlini. Starting in the mid-90s, he turned his attention to flatpicking, with an emphasis on swing and gypsy jazz. For the past 15 years, he has been a perennial favorite instructor at guitar seminars and camps, owing to his easy to understand, nuts and bolts approach to teaching the guitar. Rolly lives in rural Bucks County PA with his wife Janice and a couple Australian dogs, where he plays and teaches guitar, teaches T’ai Chi Ch’uan, and practices and teaches classical Chinese Acupuncture.

“Life is short! Music is important! Don’t procrastinate about something you actually want to do! Go to guitar camp for a week. Go to jams and festivals! Music enriches your life! Do what you love! You’ll be happier and healthier. You’ll meet some wonderful people, one of whom may be yourself.” – Rolly Brown

This lesson is designed to start you on the road to playing improvisationally over all manner of chord progressions. It will teach you how, with just a couple basic scales, you can understand how all of the twelve tones fit into a framework for soloing, and, then, how you can develop great soloing chops without even thinking about scales.

Material covered includes:

• Major and Blues scales; the basic building blocks.

• Understanding how each note sounds within a key signature

by training your ear.

• “Altered” and “Hybrid Blues” Scales, for more advanced ear training.

• Pentatonic major scales for country/rock guitar.

• How to approach solo fingerstyle Blues improvisation.

• Rolly’s 3 step process for non-scale soloing, based on chord shapes and

arpeggios.

• Chord melody playing.

• Physical mechanisms for expressive soloing.

• Making your music sound human.

Tab/music material is on the DVD as a PDF file.
